KlickEx has launched eGo SIM, a data-only travel eSIM for Pacific travellers aimed at people who have struggled to find affordable roaming while abroad.

The product provides mobile data in more than 200 destinations for users who want to avoid swapping physical SIM cards and paying standard roaming charges. Plans start at $5.50 for 1GB of data valid for seven days.

The launch expands KlickEx beyond its established remittance and payments business in the Pacific. It is targeting seasonal workers from Pacific nations, travellers visiting family overseas, and others who need internet access for messaging, maps, banking and money transfers while away from home.

Roaming has long been a challenge for many prepaid mobile users from Pacific island countries. In some cases, roaming has been unavailable; in others, the cost has been too high for regular use. As a result, travellers have often relied on airport SIM purchases or public Wi-Fi.

eGo SIM can be activated digitally through a QR code scan or mobile app on compatible smartphones. KlickEx is pitching it as a prepaid option with fixed charges, rather than conventional roaming bills that can rise unexpectedly during travel.

Regional focus

Although travel eSIM products are widely available internationally, KlickEx is positioning its offer around the travel patterns of Pacific communities. That includes Recognised Seasonal Employer workers in New Zealand and participants in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme, many of whom spend long periods away from home and rely on mobile internet to stay in touch with relatives and manage day-to-day finances.

The service sits alongside KlickEx's wider payments offering, which includes money transfer services and a prepaid Visa debit card. The link reflects a broader effort to combine communications and financial tools for customers who regularly move between Pacific nations and larger labour markets such as New Zealand and Australia.

KlickEx has built its business around lowering remittance costs and extending access to financial services in countries including Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and Fiji. The move into travel connectivity suggests it sees mobile data as closely tied to financial access, particularly for customers who use smartphones for banking, payments and remittance management.

For migrant and seasonal workers, connectivity has both personal and practical value. Internet access supports contact with family, and it also allows workers to manage earnings, check account balances, send money home and navigate services in host countries without relying on fixed-line internet or local SIM registration processes.

Customer proposition

The eSIM format removes the need for travellers to queue for local SIM cards on arrival or swap out their existing numbers. On compatible handsets, users can download a digital SIM profile before departure or after landing, allowing them to connect to local networks without replacing their primary physical SIM.

Data-only plans also reflect changes in how many travellers communicate. Messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Viber have reduced the need for traditional voice and text packages, especially among migrant communities that already rely on app-based contact with relatives across borders.

Coverage in more than 200 destinations gives KlickEx a broad geographic footprint, extending beyond Pacific routes into Asia, Europe and the Americas. That matters for users whose journeys may include stopovers or onward travel, rather than direct trips between island nations and Australia or New Zealand.

Competition in the travel eSIM market has increased as smartphone support for embedded SIM technology has widened. Larger global providers already offer international data packages through apps and online marketplaces, but KlickEx appears to be seeking differentiation through its focus on Pacific users and its existing customer base in cross-border finance.

The commercial test will be whether that community focus helps it attract customers in a market where price, ease of use and local relevance all matter. The company is also relying on handset compatibility, which varies by device model and market, as eSIM support is still not universal across smartphones used in Pacific countries.

Ben Kealy, Chief Executive Officer of KlickEx Pacific, said: "This milestone reflects KlickEx's commitment to providing a true 'one-stop shop' for our customers across the Pacific and beyond. Launching the eGo eSIM cements our relationship with our users by providing real, tangible value on mobile data-sitting directly alongside our market-leading rates on money transfers. We are removing the digital barriers that have held back Pacific travellers for far too long."
